You might remember that a little while back, around the 28th of February to be exact, we predicted that the Emoji Planet slot by NetEnt would suck. Hard.
So when NetEntertainment released the video showcasing the game coming out August 23rd, we were… curious.
How bad could this be?
Well, it turns out… not bad?
Have a look at the Emoji Planet slot video:
Before we go on about the many reasons we were wrong about this Android and iOS slot, have a quick look at the game play:
That’s right folks. This is NetEnt’s first foray in what is fast becoming the most popular forms of online slot machine out there: the grid slot.
Turns out, it has nothing to do with the Emoji movie
The main and primary reason why we hated the idea of this theme, is because we hated the movie.
That’s right, did you know an Emoji film is due out in August 2017?
And the license for the emoticons is the same that NetEnt is using in their Emoji Planet slot coming out the same month.

It wasn’t a big leap to assume both were related.
And whilst technically they are, NetEnt have strayed far away from what looks to be a mediocre kids film, and turned the theme around.
The first ever NetEnt grid slot?
So, now we’ve admitted we were wrong, and that this new Emoji Planet slot machine might be salvageable, let’s have a look at the features shall we?
- 6 reels 5 row video slot which uses cluster pays
- Avalanche feature means symbols disappear on a win
- Collect emoji’s for a chance to trigger 5 bonus game features
- Min/max bet: 0.20 / 200
- Max win: 1,000,000
It looks like something shiny and new, never seen before in the NetEntertainment slot portfolio.
Wait a second… I remember Cluster Pays….
It has, in fact similar mechanics to the Aloha Cluster Pays slot, where if you got 9 symbols touching either vertically or horizontally, you got a win.
The good news is that Emoji Planet seems to have learnt from it’s past mistakes, and here you only need to find 5 symbols touching to get a win.
So already we’re seeing slight improvements on a model where NetEnt have not been particularly successful in the past.
Lots of bonus game slot features
This is where we are hopeful for this Emoji Planet slot game.

Because if there is one thing we like about all ways pays slot machines, is when you get lots and lots of action on screen.
You get them by collecting emoji symbol wins; 12 to be exact. And when you do, you get one of the following 5 bonuses:
- Bomb feature: 8 random symbols on the reels are destroyed and a random coin win is awarded.
- Pizza feature: A 3×3 overlay of a random symbol appears on screen.
- Kiss Mark feature: 3 sticky wilds show on screen for up to 3 possible wins.
- Rocket feature: A stack of 10 wild symbols appear on and above one of the reels.
- Two hearts feature: Total win is multiplier by the number of times the meter is filled up, plus one.
The pros and cons of this Emoji Planet mobile slot
Until it finally comes out on August 23rd 2017, it’s hard to say for sure how this game can play.
But that doesn’t stop us from taking a wild shot in the dark guess.
Pro: You can trigger multiple features at once
This is one of the biggest pros in our book. Because you get bonus features by collecting symbols, and you can get a whole chain reaction of wins using the avalanche feature…
It stands to reasons that you can collect multiple bonus features which will then trigger one after the other, potentially creating more wins, and then triggering more slot bonuses.
Let’s just say that we are more than a little excited about this idea.
Con: A theme that appeals mostly to millennials
Let’s be honest, even your grandma probably knows how to use an emoji or two.
Though we’d probably refrain from explaining to her why she shouldn’t use the Aubergine emoji to send to her grand kids.
But it’s still something that will mostly appeal to the generation who can’t remember what it was like not to have a mobile phone. Ever.
True, NetEnt have made it cute enough that fans of casino slots like Toki Time from Thunderkick or Tokidoki from IGT will appreciate.
Pro: Emoji Planet has a top win of one million in cash!?
We were equally surprised and flabbergasted… until we made the maths, and realised that with the max bet standing at a healthy 200 a spin, that’s actually around 5,000 times your bet.
Which is no small sum.

Even high variance games barely go much higher than around 4,000 times your bet; including the brand new Six Acrobats by Microgaming, and the well loved Raging Rhino slot machine.
So the fact that Emoji Planet manages to top that and, by the looks of it, pay often, would be very impressive.
If it delivers that is.
Con: Can it ever be as good as the Play’n GO grid slots?
Play’n GO were probably the first casino software to make grid slots really popular.
It began with their iconic slot Energoonz, but really went full steam ahead with their multi-level game Gemix.
Nowadays we are basically in love with the mobile Viking Runecraft video slot, which has 10,000 levels, 10 bonus features, instant game wins, and a jackpot.
We’re not sure NetEnt’s Emoji Planet slot will be able to compete, but this is a software that has created plenty of iconic games of it’s own.
Never underestimate Net Entertainment
So whilst you wait for Emoji Planet to come out on the 23rd of August, why not enjoy all this casino software has to offer, as well as try a few grid slots?
Our favourite NetEnt and Play’n GO casino at the moment has to be VideoSlots, which hosts a further 43 software and thousands of games.
Plus, you get a 100% up to $£€200 bonus and 11 free spins no deposit on Starburst. A great way to start a good day.
Smiley face.
