Hey, remember the Butterfly Staxx slot game? It came out in June of 2017? Very pretty, with 40 paylines and floating butterfly symbols that move from the right to the left of the reels?
Remember that game? No? Ha.
Well, we are not that surprised to be honest, because it was a pretty forgettable game. We gave it a 3-star slot review, which means it’s a fun enough distraction for a few spins, with some good features, but unlikely that you’d play much beyond that first week of release.
And now we get Butterfly Staxx 2. So… Yippee?
What can we expect from the Butterfly Staxx 2 slot?
The theme is very similar and those beautiful golden butterflies are back to captivate your attention… if only for a second.
Watch this 3 minute YouTube video giving you all the details of the game, or skip it and keep reading. We will cover all the main points anyway.
We have to admit, with the softer edges and more traditional look, we prefer the design of this Butterfly Staxx 2 slot to the original, which was a little too angular for our taste.
They’ve kept some of the basics the same. You still get a 5×3 reel slot machine with 40 paylines and a butterfly symbol that, when it lands to cover a reel, will move to the left and give you free re-spins of the other reels, continuing to catch more butterflies.
It’s like sticky wins, only harder to catch, and with only one symbol.
Except now, Net Entertainment seemed to have learnt from their mistake and have added a few little extras to keep things interesting.
The main features in Butterfly Staxx 2:
- 5×4 slot with 40 paylines
- Wild and scatter symbols
- One stack of Butterflies start the re-spins, two stacks of butterfly unlocks a second slot machine. If that second play area gets two stacks of butterflies, you unlock a third slot machine. All played during free re-spins.
- Butterfly symbols move from the right of the reels to the leftmost reel.
- 3 scatters gives you a choice of two bonuses: Butterfly Spins or Butterfly Frenzy.
- Butterfly Spins: You get 3 slot machines with only cocoon symbols. Cocoons can open up to reveal Butterflies which will fly to the right of the screen.
- Butterfly Frenzy: multi-level Pick Me Game where you click on flying Butterflies to win cash prizes
Plenty here to unpack, so let’s have a look at whether this is an improvement on the original, or just adding more for nothing.
Is this Butterfly 2 Staxx slot any good?
It’s not going to be worse than the original. So that’s already a good sign because the original was, frankly, ok. It wasn’t bad. It was just OK and a little forgettable.
Adding those extra features may not save it, but it will make it more interesting. If nothing else because you have something else to look forward to as you take a few spins on this new NetEnt slot machine.
We are not convinced this casino slot needed or deserved a sequel, but as we are getting one anyway, let’s take a look at what could be great, and what could be bad.
Where it could go wrong:
So the problem with the original was that it got a little boring after a while because you are only looking for one symbol: the butterfly. Nothing else matters, no other wins get you anything worth shouting about.
It doesn’t look like this will change with the Butterfly 2 Staxx video slot, because all the focus is on those pretty little butterflies. So unless they’ve changed the paytable dramatically to give those flowers a little more punch… well it could be a little samey again.
Especially as the Butterflies trigger the 3 games set up, and you only get butterflies in the bonus games.
Why it could go right:
Well, you technically have three bonus games.
- Play on 2 or 3 slot machines at a time with the Butterfly re-spins
- Play bonus spins on 3 slot machines with randomly revealing symbols
- 10 stage click me game full of butterflies
And that’s not mentioning the original feature where Butterflies fly from the left-hand side of the screen to give you more wins.
In short, it could be pretty exciting, as long as at least one of those features pays out big, and you get a nice mix of features keeping you busy from a base game that (frankly) doesn’t seem all that exciting.
